The diving masks, which seem very few people were still in use during the Covid epidemic season, are becoming breathing aids for patients. By 3D printing technology, doctors in Italy have contributed to reducing the shortage of medical supplies and equipment.
Manufacturing ventilators for Covid-19 patients using 3D technology
Amidst the scarcity of breathing aids, an Italian doctor has devised a way to turn diving masks into breathing apparatus thanks to advanced 3D printing technology with a small cost and fast fabrication time.
Italian-based 3D printing company Isinnova has teamed up with sports chain Decathlon to help hospitals.
Decathlon supplies a large amount of diving masks for Insinnova to build a Covid-19 patient respirator that is equivalent to C-PAP masks. This is a specialized medical instrument in oxygen therapy for critically ill patients with breathing problems.
However, the inventors of the device using 3D printers say that these respirators should only be used in case of emergency.
Isinnova patented “Charlotte Valve” and says it will remain “free to use” so that every hospital around the world can apply “if needed”.
This useful initiative comes as the number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in Europe is increasing rapidly, especially in Italy.
