Reverse Engineering – New car design – To save time and effort during the designing process, designers usually use real parts or mock-up parts as a starting point. This is particularly true with handcrafted designs (supercars), or prototypes made without 3D CAD models for reference (rare cars, prototypes).
The Process of Reverse Engineering in Car Design:
Design original sketches:
The first step of the designing process is having an inception. This is usually performed by an artist/ animated technician, who will sketch the most fundamental shapes of the designated car.
Moulding and carving clay models:
After the sketching process is completed, the drawing will be used to mould and carve a model (usually made of clay) that would serve to shape the future car, for the 3D scanning process.

After the point-cloud data from 3D scanning process has been fully collected, the data will be imported into Reverse Engineering softwares (Eg: Geomagic Design X) to process Polygonal Meshes and Surfacing processes to become 3D CAD models.
The 3D CAD design of the car will be sent to the manufacturing plant for manufacturing and assembling of parts to make finished cars.
