3D Scanning – Potential application in Digital Security – Along with the development of technology, especially digital devices such as smartphones, tablets and personal computers, it cannot go without mention that security technologies are also growing rapidly. From the earliest technologies such as PIN codes and passwords, to modern technologies such as fingerprint, retinal scanning, the most modern of which being 3D Scanning technology.
According to Gurman (2017) [1], Apple is currently developing 3D Scanning on its smart digital devices, rumored to be the iPhone 8. This new identity recognition technology is promised to replace Apple’s fingerprint scanning technology Touch ID, which was integrated into the iPhone 5S.

According to the source, the 3D sensor is capable of scanning and recognizing its user’s face in a few hundred milliseconds, even able to scan one’s face with the phone lying flat on a table instead of having to hold it close to one’s face. With the advantage of collecting hundreds of thousands of data points per second, 3D Scanning technology has much higher level of security in comparison with fingerprint scanning, which collects much fewer.

Furthermore, 3D sensor is regarded as having a much higher level of security compared with Samsung’s retinal scanner. While Samsung’s Galaxy S8’s retinal scanner has been easily fooled by users using a photo of its users’ eyes as target for its scanner, Apple’s 3D Scanner allows for recognition in depth, making it less likely to be fooled by two-dimensional images (Gurman, 2017). [1]
If applied successfully, this could be the furthest jump yet of Apple in one of its most important products.
