3D Scanning – Water Dipping – A group of researchers from Ben-Gurion University (Israel), led by Professor Andrei Sharf, proceeded with an experiment of scanning objects by combining natural elements (water) and artificial intelligence (robotic arms) to develop a new 3D scanning technology with high precision.
Researchers applied the Archimedes principles in water displacements to turn the process of recreating object’s surface into the problem of measuring water volumes. In the experiment, the volume of water replaced by the part of object dipped in water is exactly equal to the volume of the object. By measuring the volume of water displaced on every dip, researchers can achieve the 3D design of the object by analyzing the change in water volume. One of the advantages of this “scanning” method is the field-of-vision problem, as it can “see” into hidden angles and optical limitation that other 3D scanning methods are having problems with (Davies, 2017) [1]
According to Prof. Aberman (2017) [2], this scanning method is related to Computed Tomography (CT). CT uses penetrative waves to collect radiation absorption data between parallel beams. While CT has to use an expensive and large system under safe, controlled environment, this new method is safe to use, cheap and not dangerous.
