3D Printing Plastic – ABS – ABS plastic, whose full name is Acrylonitrile Butadine Styrene, is an opaque, amorphous Thermoplastic.

Characteristics:

Firstly, ABS belongs to Thermoplastic group, based on its response to heat sources. ABS in particular, and Thermoplastics in general, liquifies at glass transition temperature (221⁰C for ABS plastic). ABS plastic can be heated and melted, cooled down and reheated without significant change in chemical characteristics. Therefore, ABS can be recycled.

Furthermore, ABS is an amorphous plastic, which means it is without molecular form. Thus, ABS does not possess characteristics of crystalline plastics, for instance, ABS can be morphed at glass transition temperature, without needing to reach melting temperature.

How ABS is made:

There are two popular ways to make ABS plastic. The first way is by means of Emulsion, in which ABS is made by mixing different materials that are typically not capable of being chemically joint into a single substance. Another method is recycling ABS. Because of its ability to be physically morphed when heated without changing in chemical nature, we can make new ABS products by melting existing, unused ones.

Comparison with other types of plastic:

The first advantage of ABS is physical durability. ABS can withstand corrosive chemicals and high resistance to physical impacts. Moreover, it is relatively cheap, approximately $1.5/pound (equivalent to 34,050 VND/0.405kg or 84,074VND/kg).

Application:

ABS plastic has countless applications, from keys on a keyboard, power-tool housing (drills, cutters, etc.), protective face of a socket, and LEGO toys.
