    3D Scanning Application in Quality Control – By applying the 3D Scanning technologies in Quality Control process of mechanical parts, they are guaranteed of utmost precision in comparison with the original 3D CAD models.

    In the simplest explanation, 3D Scanning is a geometric measurement method of the real parts, and send them into the digital world. The input data is point-cloud data in STL format. The 3D-scanned object can be as small as a ring, or as large as an automobile. 3D-scanned data has many applications, such as creating 3D CAD models, Reverse Engineering, Rapid Prototyping (3D Printing), etc. One of those applications is Quality Control.

    The process of applying 3D Scanning in Quality Control:

    Using non-contact 3D Scanning method, the object will be scanned 360 degrees to create a solid, watertight 3D model; each scanning step is automatically aligned with each other via computer algorithm to minimise errors.

                    Step 2: Comparing 3D Scanned data with the original 3D CAD Model:

    The point-cloud data is compared with the original 3D CAD design via Quality Control softwares (Eg: Geomagic Control X). The software will automatically compare the entire scanned dta with the 3D CAD model, then export all the information to Quality Control reports.

                    Step 3: View Quality Control reports:

    With PDF format, Quality Control reports can be viewed on all devices (PC/laptops, tablets, smartphones), providing users with all relevant information on the part inspected.

    By using the 3D Scanning method for Quality Control, the inspection process of manufactured parts become faster, more accurate, with minimised efforts compared to traditional measurement methods (measurements by hand, using touch-probe CMM inspection machines).
