3D printed bricks created by sunlight and dust from the moon are the result of the European Space Agency (ESA). They have researched and tested 3D printers to create new materials with the same strength as plaster.
Use 3D printers to create 3D printed tiles
Future tourists may go to the Moon; Mars and uses materials here to build habitats. Recently, scientists at the University of California funded by NASA to create super powerful bricks from Mars dust. And recently, ESA scientists have the ability to create bricks using 3D printers using the same particle with the same composition and size from the Moon.
Materials engineer Advenit Makaya said they heated a layer of lunar dust with a thickness of 0.1mm in a solar furnace with a temperature of 1,000 degrees Celsius. The team completed the creation of a brick with the size of 20x10x2.7cm in 5 hour intervals. The solar furnace is located at the German Space Center (DLR) – which has recently succeeded in creating the largest artificial Sun in the world.
The bricks are currently undergoing mechanical testing. Scientists are looking for ways to manage brick deformations.
The European Union’s Horizon 2020 program will develop a project on 3D printing technology to shape the structure of the Moon.
3D printing technology has many great and practical effects on life. Let’s explore, experiment and create with more 3D printing technology.
