3D Scanning – Game Simulation – Almost every gamer has at least once dreamed of setting foot into the world of videogames, such as the Flying City of “Bioshock Infinite”, or the 14th Century Renaissance version of Venezia (the city of Venice) in “Assassin’s Creed 2”. With 3D Scanning technology, it is now possible.
Currently the technology that meets the requirement is very costly (3D Scanner Ultra HD of Next Engine or Einscan Pro/ Pro + of Shining 3D both have the price range from $3500 to $5000), therefore they are very hard to access for the majority of the users. Instead of that approach, the research team at University of Southern California (USC) uses low cost sensor devices such as Microsoft Kinect or Intel Real Sense, to collect digital data of players and save to computer for editing and importing into the game, allowing them to actually step into the virtual world (McDonald, 2016) [1]

Ari Shapiro, head of Animation and Character Simulation team is developing a software kit which allows users to 3D scan and build their animation themselves, completely free.
The 3D process consist of 3 parts: 3D scanning, automatic alignment, and simulation software called Smart Body (McDonald, 2016) [1]

This direction of development is not only applicable in digital videogame industries, but also able to expand to social interaction activities. By using 3D scanned data as an “avatar”, in the foreseeable future, phone calls consist purely of sound will become face-to-face conversations. 3D simulation can revolutionalize our social interation (McDonald, 2016) [1]
