3D Scanning – Heritage Preservation – With high-value architectural and cultural heritages, the application of 3D scanning brings high effiency in preserving cultural legacies and long-term preservation of historical, architectural and artistic objects.
Some 3D Scanning technologies in preserving cultural heritages:
Medium-long range 3D Scanning (LiDAR):
Purpose of usage: Topography (Land scanning) and architectural data recording.
Benefits: 3D scanning large areas of land, or large buildings with high precision.
3D Scanners: FARO Focus3D X 330 (used by FACTUM Arte to record 3D data of San Petronio Basillica church in Bologna.
Close-range scanning (8cm-1m):
Purpose of usage: 3D scan the surface of paintings and carved panels; shapes and surfaces of sculptures and complex shapes such as those in the Tomb of Tutankhamun, sclupture in San Petronio;… Scanned data can be extracted for restoration or to make copies for display.
Benefits: high precision, up to ±0.01mm, allowing for recording of even the smallest details of the scanned object.
Photogrammetry:
Purpose of usage: recording of 3D data for objects that are hard to access (high location, war zone, etc.) or to record object with rapid movement (human, live animals, moving liquid, etc.)
Photogrammetry can use commercial cameras to rapidly capture the angles of the object’s surface. At-the-field premilinary editing is required to ensure no missing angle. The post-scan processing process is relatively complex and time-consuming.
Benefits: scan of hard-to-access objects; devices are commercially available.
