A 3D material that is more durable than steel is the result of research by a group of students. As more and more 3D printed materials are available, the technology becomes even more useful. Scientists have found 3D printing technology could increase the usefulness of existing materials. With special shapes, we can create materials with better mechanical properties.
Invented 3D materials that are more durable than steel
When studying the strength-to-mass ratio of a material; Scientists work to create durable but lightweight materials for many fields. (Take the aircraft industry for example.) This is a goal that scientists at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology are aiming for.
By using Nanoscribe laser marking printers; PhD student Jens Brauer and colleagues developed a process for the 3D printed structure that is tiny, lighter than water but more durable than steel. Brauer said this is experimental evidence proving the existence of this material.
Most materials are capable of withstanding pressures up to 280Mpa; (Megapascals: commonly used to measure material hardness or strength.) Is a metal alloy whose properties are almost similar to the spectral range. However, there are a few exceptions. Wood and bone have high material strength while maintaining a light weight thanks to the porous internal structure. Based on the properties of natural materials; The team undertook to design 3D structures that are similar in nature.
The properties of the new 3D material are durable and lightweight
Bauer’s team has shown the structure of 3D printed materials with very small dimensions, shapes as above. To increase stiffness; an aluminum oxide layer is coated on the outer surface using an atomic deposition layer (ALD). The most durable structure can be made lighter than 1,000kg / m3 and can withstand pressures up to 280Mpa with a honeycomb shape and a 50 nanometer thick aluminum coating. This makes the material lighter than water and more durable than some forms of steel.
At the present time, Nanoscribe only allows 3D printing of small details. One of their new machines is capable of printing objects several millimeters in size, Bauer says. With the rapid development of the 3D printing industry, the team can publish real-world applications in the near future.
