3D Printed homes for the Homeless – The homeless is a difficult problem to tackle in many large cities. Most condos and appartments are too expensive for them to afford/hire. When large cities like New York city (USA) forbid building of new Single Room Occupancies (SROs) or transformation of commercial homes into SROs, 3D printing technology became the solution, by ultilizing existing spaces (Scott, 2017).
A creative company based in New York and Oslo, Framlab, used innovative technology and design to resolve housing problem for the homeless and perhaps, brought about a better future for them. Instead of traditional houses, Framlab ultilizes empty spaces, such as the sides of buildings that do not have doors or windows. Their “Homed” project consists of complexes of hexagonal pods, with experiors made of aluminum, and 3D-printed interiors made from recycled Polycarbonate. 3D printing technology allows for flexible designing abilities in accordance with the residents’ wishes, such as interior layouts and number of levels, etc. Each pod is separated with the outside by PMMA smart glass that can display digial contents, such as advertisements and artworks (Scott, 2017).
Framlab has made it explicit that these complexes of houses are not permanent solutions, but merely a way to provide an alternative to shelter houses, which are usually crowded and unsafe (Scott, 2017).
This is only a temporary solution, as the core issue remains, which is the severe lack of low income housing. So long as real estate brokers keep focusing on medium – high income without regards to low income housing, the poor will continue to be shoved out to the streets. For now, 3D printed hexagonal houses seem to be a pretty fine temporal solution (Scott, 2017).
