3D-Printed Masks There is something always affecting me every time I try to look at this 3D-printed mask. A chill down my spines.

That fear came from the facial expressions, they are connected to identify the expressions of others. A mask conceals one’s fear, and in some cases, it brings about different sensations.
For a woman named Melissa Ng of Lumecluster, masks are her passion. Especially 3D-printed masks, which she designed entirely by herself.
“Each of my masks serves the purpose of bringing up a discussion about hope and fear; especially among us, the self-employed, the creative, the planners, the dreamers, etc.”, Ng spoke to 3DPrint.com.
Ng supplies a range of different mask customizations at her Shapeways store. They are categorized into two groups: Dreamer, and Nightmare. Dreamer masks are the symbol of the Dreamer revolution that Ng believes she is leading, encouraging to dream, a dream of the future, of the possibilities and dream what can finally be. Dreamer masks are relatively friendly, describing a capable person who dare to dream. The Dreamer collection includes designs called “Illumination” and “Breakthrough”.
Nightmare masks aren’t so friendly. The first in the Nightmare collection is designed to represent Fear; the fear that consumes us in our sleep as well as in our waking life. Fear is the opposite of dream, because it has the capability to turn our Dreams into Nightmares.
“Both you and I know we can’t stop all our nightmares”, Ng. “At the end of the day, it’s a part of the learning experience. What we can do is to help each other patiently and remember why we do what we do. But sometimes, words alone aren’t enough”.
Instead of just printing in 3D and supply 3D editions of 3D masks at Shapeways, Ng made a decision to go further with the help of her friends at Adafruit.
“I found the EL wire of Adafruit a good place to start”, Ng explained to 3DPrint.com. “My hot glue gun is very useful for Rapid making and it doesn’t make anything too permanent. Basically, I took the EL wire and follow the outer layer as best I could and glue it to the mask inside. The Nightmare mask: Fear, of course, means looking a bit scary and maybe even terrifying. EL wire is perfect to create this effect and it also helps to enhance the mask design”.
As can be seen in the below footage, the combination of EL wire and complex details of Ng’s masks brings about a unique appearance. The outer layer of the mask is 3D printed 4.5mm from the inside of the mask, to create a soft shadow, especially when lit.
Ng told us she would create a creative model of Dreamer Mask, providing a brighter light and hopefully “more ethereal”. The glowing mask will come from Ng in the future.
