3D Printing – Animations Production – When the word “3D Printing” comes to mind, people speak of it as a technology of the future, using state-of-the-art technologies of the world. Meanwhile, Stop-Motion animation technology is an old practice of animation making from the 60s of the 20th century.
Stop Motion animation:
Stop Motion animation is a animation technology in which models are adjusted incrementally with each photo frame, in order to produce the illusion of movement when the entire sequence is played (Brostow & Essa, 2001).
Some of the famous Stop-Motion movies include “The Nightmare before Christmas” (1993) and “Chicken Run” (2000).
Advantage of 3D printing in Stop Motion animation:
In comparison with traditional Stop Motion technologies using clay models (Clay-Motion), the usage of 3D Printing to create character models has a much higher productivity compared to molding and editing clay models.
Furthermore, 3D printing technology has achieved the level of subtlety that previously on Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) technology can achieve. Thus, LAIKA Entertainments (Laika for short) has applied 3D printing into its Stop Motion movie production since “Coraline” (2006) (Creative Bloq, 2014) [2].
3D Printing application in Stop Motion movies:
With 3D printing technology, Laika can create, draw, engineer and modify their designs using 3D softwares, then print thousands of face models with different expressions. With “The BoxTrolls” (2014), Laika used a record number of 3D Printed facial expression models, with more than 53,000 different models.
Not only used during the filming process, 3D Printing appears in all steps of the productions process. From pre-production, 3D Printing was used to create concept arts for the movies’ characters. While filming, thousands of 3D printed models are used for the filming process. Afterwards, Laika also makes characters figurine for the movies’ marketing campaigns (Creative Bloq, 2014) [2].
