The Polysher improves 3D Printed Surfaces – After the 3D printing process, the resulting product of the additive manufacturing process often leaves layering lines as the 3D Printing process builds the object one layer at a time. A Chinese company, Polymaker, researched and developed a machine called The Polysher which has the ability to smooth the 3D printed surfaces to make them look like injection-molded products.
In 2016, Polymaker started a Start-up campaign to raise funds for their 3D printed products’ smoothing device. The fund raising campaign was a complete success with $433,860 raised, not only from individual donors, but large firms in China as well. Polysher then underwent Research and Development and released shortly after (Mendoza, 2017) [1]
Operating principles:
The Polysher appears not so different from daily-life kitchen appliances. It operates by creating a thin mist of Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) onto the 3D printed surface of an object using PolySmooth filaments, inside the device. This specifically designed filament material has an optimal adaptability with the IPA mist, allowing for the 3D printed surface to entirely lose its layer lines and become perfectly smooth.
One year after Polysher’s release, Polymaker teams have researched and developed a new nebulizer system for the Polysher. The nebulizer is the device’s part in charge of creating the IPA mist and spray it into the chamber thousands of times per second. The improved nebulizer allows for the Polysher to create denser mist at a higher speed, thus improve the stability, reliability and reduce the necessary time to create smooth surface.
