Reverse Engineering Application – Reverse Engineering typically refers to a process in which designers acquire a design concept of a product from digitalization of a physical model, and create a CAD model to realize approximation to the physical model: The model created can be reused, modified and optimized (Zhang, 2003).
Main applications of Reverse Engineering:
- Design of a new part
- Copy of an existing part
- Recovery of a damage/broken part
- Improving quality and eficiency of an existing part
Reverse Engineering process:
- Digitalization of the object: The Reverse Engineering process typically starts with the digitalization process, in which the object undergoes a tactile measurement (CMM) or optical measurement (3D Scanning).
- Processing of measurement data: The output data of the measurement process are coordinate values at the X, Y and Z direction. The output data must be transformed into a format acceptable by 3D softwares. Then the measurement data that does out of tolerance must be filtered out and processed in a visualized way. The data can be used directly to create CAD models.
- Creation of CAD models: There are two ways to create CAD models from measurement data using free-form feature modelling.
- Curve mode: curves are created first from measurement data, then CAD models can be generated from the construction curves mesh created
- Surface mode: the surface is created directly from measurement data.
- Manufacturing of the part using CAD model: After the CAD models have been created completely, it can be exported to STL format for 3D Printing or CAM format for CNC machining.
Conclusion:
Reverse Engineering is an efficient method to reduce development cycle greatly and ensure product quality in designing and manufacturing of parts with complex surface. Its purpose is to acquire design from a physical part, and furthermore, to optimize the product design.
